High density foam has a compression rate of 44 lbs. It features the perfect
amount of cushioning and stiffness. It’s firm and holds its firmness and
support for an individual to sit or lean on it without compressing the foam
too much but it’s not rock hard. Size : 2″ x 24″ x 96″, density : 1.8″, 100%
recovery rate 44lb compression = firmness compression (not density) is what
determines firmness. If you don’t want a cushion that’s hard as a rock or a
mattress that sinks when you sit on it, you have to check the compression or
ILD number. Compression means the number of pounds necessary to compress a
piece of foam 25% in 50 in² (about 7″x7″) and still bounce back to the
original thickness. For example, a 4″ thick x 7” wide x 7” long piece of foam
that requires 44 lbs. to pack it down 1″ and have it return to its full 4″
thickness has a 44lb ILD. Therefore, a person with a bottom area of about
14″x14″ and weighing 160lb applies about 40lb per 50 in² which will make the
4″ foam sink about 1 “.
