of music. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them opens in 1926 as Newt
Scamander has just completed a global excursion to find and document an
extraordinary array of magical creatures. Arriving in New York for a brief
stopover, he might have come and gone without incident…were it not for a No-
Maj (American for Muggle) named Jacob, a misplaced magical case, and the
escape of some of Newt’s fantastic beasts, which could spell trouble for both
the wizarding and No-Maj worlds. James Newton Howard, describing the project
and his introduction to the film, remarked, ‘It’s like joining a family in a
way; I was made to feel very welcome. The scope of the movie, emotionally,
visually, in every way, is very broad. There are funny moments, magical,
beautiful moments, and there are some dark and scary moments. The music helps
tell the story. I’ve had fun writing themes for the various characters and
giving a musical voice to this wonderful new movie. It’s been a great
collaboration with musicians and filmmakers, and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it!’
