Chris Sanders first began thinking about a Stitch-like character nearly 17
years ago when he was just out of school. He revisited the idea around 1997,
when he proposed a simple yet strong character-driven film involving his
creation.|In the early stages of story development, Stitch landed in rural
Kansas and interacted entirely with animals. Animation president Thomas
Schumacher suggested that Stitch interact with people instead, while a well-
timed Hawaii vacation gave Sanders the idea to move the story from the
barnyard to the beach.
