The flowers are sombrero-shaped with drooping reddish-yellow petals around a brown cone. Mexican Hat puts on a great display of color, and it provides a source of nectar for bees and butterflies.
- Mexican hat flowers are a 12 – 36 inch tall perennial flower growing in USDA zones 3 – 9.
- It has a long bloom season, and it is usually resistant to deer. It is recommended to start Mexican Hat seed directly outdoors in the late fall. Prepare a seedbed, press the seed into the soil and cover with 1/8 inch of soil.
- In the spring when temperatures begin to warm up, germination is usually within 28 days. Grow Mexican Hat in full sun and in hot, dry conditions. Well-drained soil is needed. Space plants 18 inches apart.
