mobile app. With the included Bluetooth-enabled microcontroller block, the

LightUp was founded by Josh, a teacher, and Tarun, an electrical engineer, who
met at Stanford University while running educational workshops. They couldn’t
find a product that excited kids while teaching them the skills and concepts
they’d need as the scientists, engineers, and innovators of the future.

Kids can build exciting projects by snapping together magnetic circuit blocks,
and then use the LightUp Learning app (for iPad) to interactively learn
important concepts. The app includes introductory projects to get started,
with new project ideas added every week. LightUp Lens, the in-app augmented
reality feature, helps kids out when things don’t work, and even gives them
X-ray vision by letting them see electricity flow! The LightUp Tesla Kit
empowers kids to build the projects only they can dream up. The LightUp
Learning app teaches them how to code the included microcontroller block,
which can be wirelessly programmed over Bluetooth 4.0! With the Tesla Kit,

MakingHow did you come up with the idea for this product?Though we come from
different backgrounds (Josh a high school teacher and Tarun a software
engineer), we realized soon after meeting at Stanford that we shared a passion
for using technology to enable learning in the most engaging and inclusive
way. From our time in the classroom we were amazed at how outdated and
unintuitive existing products were, so we set out to create our first product
line to teach STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) in a
groundbreaking way.What makes your product special?We’ve seen entire
classrooms gasp in amazement after using the LightUp app to see electricity
flowing right in front of them. We’ve seen a 6-year-old build a circuit and
program it to play a song (both for the very first time) to his mom’s
amazement in a matter of minutes. In our minds, it’s stories like these that
show what makes our products special. Of course, behind the scenes it’s taken
tremendous work to make this magic possible. With a lean team and in a short
amount of time, we’ve brought to market a connected toy that combines some of
the latest advances in wireless technology, computer vision, and augmented
reality. And we’re just getting started!What has been the best part of your
startup experience?Bringing an ambitious concept from just an idea in our
heads to a fully-formed product in kids’ hands around the world has been
incredible (and much too rich of a story to try to tell here).
