First adopted in 1821, and with colors believed to have been influenced by
France, the United States, and Britain as the colors of freedom, Norway’s flag
consists of a blue “Scandinavian Cross” – indicative of its union with other
Scandinavian countries – outlined in white, on a field of red. The vertical
stripe of the cross isn’t centered but shifted toward the left side of the
